In this essay Scottish philosopher David Hume notes: "By the mere light of reason it seems difficult to prove the immortality of the soul; the arguments for it are commonly derived either from metaphysical topics, or moral, or physical." He goes on to examine these arguments and finds them wanting.
Hume's essay first appeared posthumously as an anonymously published work over twenty-five years after those words were written. Suppression of this essay occurred since prospects were high that ecclesiastical wrath would descend upon the author and publisher of an essay questioning the existence of the human soul.
