DESCRIPTION
General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1903 and completed his active military service in 1951. As Commander of U.S. (and later Allied) forces in the southwestern Pacific during WWII, General Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan's surrender in 1945. MacArthur delivered this speech to cadets at West Point on May 12, 1962, in accepting the Sylvanus Thayer Award. The Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy presents the Thayer Award to outstanding U.S. citizens whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto: Duty, Honor, Country.
