T.S. Eliot's essay, "Tradition and the Individual Talent," was first published early in his career and is an attack on the idea that a poem is primarily an expression of the personality of the poet. Instead, Eliot argues, the poet expresses not his or her personality, but instead acts as a catalyst through which feelings and emotions find articulation. Poetry, he says, is not "a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion." This essay ultimately defines a critical position from which Eliot's subsequent ideas developed.
