Of the speeches made by senators from the states withdrawing from the Union, the most important was probably made by Jefferson Davis on January 21, 1861. Davis, who later became the president of the Confederacy, was one of the senators most involved with directing Southern policy. In the speech, he makes a strong statement concerning state sovereignty through his explanation of Mississippi's reasons for secession.
