English humanist philosopher Sir Thomas More wrote the satirical treatise on government "Utopia" in 1515. The word "Utopia" has Greek origin and means "no place." In More's book Utopia is an imaginary island that has an ideal society with the greatest perfection in politics, laws, and the like. Creating a fictional setting allowed More to safely compare the state of affairs in his time to an ideal world without the guarantee of reprisal by authorities. More's book prototyped numerous other later books of utopian fiction. Over time the term "Utopia" has come to mean any place or state of ideal perfection.
