DESCRIPTION
“ONE WORD AT A TIME: A Road Map for Navigating Through Dyslexia and Other Learning Disabilities” is a book that will help you learn how to take charge of a learning disability. At the age of 31, the author read on a 3rd grade level. Yet, in spite of her severe dyslexia, she earned a Ph.D. and became a clinical psychologist. It was a tough journey, but a worthwhile one. As Linda Tessler frequently states, “Today my goal is to pay forward the kindness and support that has been extended to me. I have written my book as a guide to help those with learning disabilities avoid the potholes that are encountered – and to use their inner strength and the available learning accommodations to reach their fullest potential. If I could reach my potential so can others, if they just know the way. This book intertwines two perspectives. One is a personal story of my lifelong battle with dyslexia and my experiences of raising a child with dyslexia. The other perspective is a professional one, culled from my studies and my experiences as a therapist, researcher, and psychologist specializing in learning disabilities. “ONE WORD AT A TIME” has an academic voice, and a narrative voice. The two voices interplay in a way that impacts the reader with a power that each voice could not achieve alone. “ONE WORD AT A TIME” describes the six essential life strategies -- the "Six Clues" - that are needed to deal effectively with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. It also identifies unhealthy places - such as anxiety and depression - where you need to heed the "Do Not Enter" signs. The book tells you where to get the fuel for your trip (motivation), it tells you what to pack and provides specific instructions for when you have a child on board. The book is enriched with quotations from my research of famous people who not only survived but thrived despite dyslexia. “ONE WORD AT A TIME” should be the first book a person reads when they discover that they, or their child, have a learning disability. It is easy to read and absorb. It is an essential read for those who wish to live their best life.
