DESCRIPTION
Archdeacon St. John Drelincourt Seymour was interested in Irish folklore, witchcraft and demonology. During his research he noticed the lack of availability books about Irish ghost stories.
So, in 1913, Seymour and coeditor Harry L. Neligan solicited via Irish newspaper ads for people to send tales of their encounters with ghosts. They received a huge response and compiled a book from the replies.
The compilers chose to use "ghost stories" in the title of the book to give a potential reader a general idea of the contents of this book while browsing a bookstore or advertisement. But the book gives eyewitness accounts of poltergeists, banshees, haunted houses, deathbed encounters with ghosts and death premonitions as well as details of famous and ancient apparitions and other mysterious incidents.
Subsequently the tone of True Irish Ghost Stories is informal and relaxed and provides a sense of anecdotal authenticity, as if Irish friends and family gathered in a pub and chatted. The result, not shocking or ghastly, still manages to often raise the hairs on the back of the head.
