DESCRIPTION
Historian Wallace Notestein, while researching the history of witchcraft in England, observed a corollary development: the driving out of evil spirits from persons or places by conjuration. He notes: “if witches could send evil spirits to do harm, it followed that those spirits could be expelled or exorcised by divine assistance.” Consequently, in this essay, Notestein traces the rise of English exorcism.
