DESCRIPTION
Though "Northanger Abbey" is one of Austen's earliest novels, it was not published until after her death. In it, Austen puts a satirical twist on the conventions of the gothic novel -- crumbling castles, locked rooms, mysterious cabinets -- by following the story of her heroine, Catherine Morland, who is very plain for a heroine, indeed. Catherine's adventures (and misadventures) expose the difference between fantasy and reality in both her surroundings and her relationships.
