DESCRIPTION
The poster is enjoying a widespread renaissance. Agitational, political, promotional or persuasive, it has persisted for generations as the most resonant means of public dissemination of ideas, information and opinion. It is unique in the history and development of graphic design, acting both as a historical marker and a vehicle for comment on the culture which has created it. Perhaps as a reaction to new technologies, this most traditional of graphic design forms, produced with ink and paper and often originated with defiantly low technologies such as scissors and pencil, continues to hold a fascination for all designers. This book takes a timely overview of poster design, focusing on the experimental approaches of international designers, design groups, and collectives such as Stefan Sagmeister, Ralph Schraivogel, David Tartakover, Leonardo Sonnoli, Pierre Bernard, Uwe Loesch, Koji Mizutani and Studio Boot. Supported by unique examples of work in progress, interviews and commentary from designers, Up Against the Wall takes the pulse of modern poster design, exploring the persuasive power of simplicity and directness and re-assessing the form in an age dominated by multi-media and the moving image. Issues of scale, location, sequence, image and type are all dealt with in this thoughtful and stylish appreciation of the purest form of visual communication.
