DESCRIPTION
John Stevens, the American Minister to Hawaii, wrote this article in support of annexing the independent island-nation into the United States. His argument -- a prime example of the doctrine of Manifest Destiny -- states that the invasion and annexation of Hawaii is justified by the corruption of the monarchical regime leading the nation and inevitable because of the inherent superiority of the Americans. This article first appeared in The North American Review in 1893 alongside William Springer's "Our Present Duty", which opposed annexation.
