Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, is Jane Austen's earliest work and is usually considered to be the most popular of Austen's novels. Austen began writing the novel under the title First Impressions in 1796 at the age of twenty-one. The story of matrimony, matchmaking and misunderstanding is centered around Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five daughters who live in Hertfordshire, England, near the close of the 18th century. Mrs. Bennet is an emotionally fragile, socially clueless woman permanently distracted by the issue of marrying off her daughters. Mr. Bennet remains witty, wise and uninterested in his daughters' social calendars and marital futures. The novel is full of repartee, mainly supplied by its high spirited, self-confident main character, Elizabeth Bennet, who was claimed by Austen as a favorite literary offspring.
