Reverend Dr. Henry C. Potter, Protestant Episcopal Bishop of New York, gave this after dinner speech at the seventy-third annual dinner of the New England Society in the City of New York, December 23, 1878.

Potter's response to the toast "The Church -- a fountain of charity and good works, which is not established, but establishes itself, by God's blessing, in men's hearts" emphasizes taking an utilitarian rather than an ornamental approach.
