DESCRIPTION
American professional painter, sculpture and inventor Samuel F.B. Morse was an avid promoter of the electro-magnetic telegraph in America. His efforts helped persuade Congress to support that technology. Consequent rapid spread of telegraph lines throughout the United States helped spur national communication systems.

This essay is an account of the events leading up to the May 24, 1844 milestone: the first public demonstration of a telegraph message sent between cities, from Washington D.C. to Baltimore MD.
