DESCRIPTION
Congregationalist clergyman Henry Ward Beecher gave this after dinner speech at the sixty-eighth anniversary banquet of the New England Society in the City of New York, December 22, 1873.

Beecher notes that religious oppression exists only if people fail to strongly act to prevent it. Intelligent, educated people stand on their own two feet, unfettered by religious or civil domination.
